There was a new ruling on 80% frames; a judge has reversed the serialization and definition of a fire arm. Will MATRIX start selling 80% frames again without a serial number?

      Hello Steve,

Thanks for asking. I see that Polymer80 is still selling 80% Glock style frames, albeit without tools, unless they are serialized. 5D Tactical, 80% Arms, and others, are still selling 80% AR lowers. Also Tactical Machining prevailed in getting a Preliminary injunction against the ATF which allows them to sell 80% AR lowers. However, in the injunction, it states “Presumably, Tactical Machining’s customers are still subject to felony charges for buying its products.”

We called the ATF Firearms and Technology Division and spoke with the gentleman in charge of setting up the new guidelines and procedures for the new determinations for what is to be considered a frame or receiver, and what is not considered one. From that conversation, it seemed clear that the Polymer80 Glock 80% would be considered “readily convertible” and thus illegal to sell unserialized. However, we also got the impression that the AR style receivers would not be considered “readily convertible”. At any rate, the ATF has clearly stated that all previous approvals for 80% frames or receivers are void, and thus new approvals must be received before any blank can be sold as a non frame or non receiver. Obviously there are numerous companies still selling them, so we don’t really know how this will all play out. It is clear that various states have been banning them, and the market is shrinking as a result. California was our biggest market by far, and now they are illegal there and in many other states.

We at Matrix certainly don’t want to go through the experience of getting raided by the ATF,. So we have decided to take a conservative approach and turn our attention to coming up with other products. Most of our business was in the 80% market, so it’s not an easy task.

As a side note, all the people at the ATF we have dealt with are pro 2A, and I think that most of the people working there are also gun enthusiasts. So even though the Biden administration is pushing hard ban the sale of 80% blanks, it’s quite possible that as a result of successful court cases, or the people working within the ATF, we may see the 80% movement kept alive in some form, for the people living in free states.

        Hi there,
Some of us a still hoping for a 0% Ruger MK pistol build. Is this in our future, or has that project been dropped?
        Thanks,
        William

Thanks David. I hope you have an opportunity to get back to it again. As far as I can tell, nobody else has anything like it. Fingers crossed!

Hello David, I live in Arizona. Arizona is a constitutional state. They do not care about the federal ruling or the ATF ruling .
Will you ship 80% frames that are not serialized to Arizona? Or is that not legal?

      Hello Steve,

Thanks for asking. We have been busy on some new products, and still working towards finishing some of the old projects, like the Ruger 0%.
I will do some blog post this next week.
